Forest Preserves of Cook County Bikeshare Program: Dockless Bikes

The Forest Preserves of Cook County, with our vendor Bike and Roll Chicago, is expanding an existing Forest Preserves’ bikeshare program from five to 50 locations and from 50 to 500 bicycles at our locations throughout the county. This opportunity for residents is made possible thanks to innovative new dockless bikeshare technology.

Using the HOPR advanced mobility platform and dockless technology, the program will have more flexibility in locating hubs and users will be able to pick up, ride, and lock bikes in more places. Additionally, the dockless bikes on-board smart lock are powered by solar panels, eliminating the need for large docking stations and in-ground wiring or infrastructure. The minimal equipment eases hub relocation, expansion, or temporary closure for special events or emergencies.

To access dockless bikes, users can download the HOPR app which provides an intuitive, user-friendly interface to register, find, and unlock a bike via smartphone. The app allows for the rental of bikes per half hour or seasonal pass use, and will cost $2.50 per half hour or $60 for a seasonal “Bike The Preserves” membership. Veterans, students and seniors with proper documentation qualify for a reduced rate of 10 percent on annual membership.
