Willow Springs 1st grader finalist in Web Contest

Willow Springs, IL (4/09/08) -- Willow Springs Mayor Alan Nowaczyk is encouraging local residents to get out the vote for a prized member of the village—six-year-old Nikolas Mennemeier—one of only 20 finalists in a nationwide adventure contest.

“I think it’s a great thing for young Nikolas and his family, and something fun for our village to go to the web and cast votes to help him win the contest,” Nowaczyk said.

The Pleasantdale Elementary first-grader took a cutout of popular Nickelodeon television cartoon character Jimmy Neutron on an adventure to downtown Chicago for the Thanksgiving Day Parade.  There he posed with his cartoon cutout in front of the giant inflatable turkey that kicks off the event, attended by some 400,000 parade goers.  That photo earned him a finalist spot in the Chrysler Jimmy Neutron Adventure Contest.

“What a great idea taking his buddy Jimmy Neutron with him to the parade with all those people there,” Nowaczyk said. “I think it’s a wonderful photo.  I hope everyone gets their friends and family members to give the boy a hand with this contest.”

Nikolas’s mom, Joanne, explained that her son marched in the parade along with other members of his Scottish dancing troupe, the Thistle and Heather Highland Dancers.  Nikolas’s excitement is growing as he is getting a lot of support for his photo, currently standing in third-place overall in the voting.  He has his eye on one the prizes, mom said, a vacation to Florida.

“After this long winter, we could all really use it,” she added.

Six prizes will be given away to the youngsters who earn the most votes at the website www.chryslerjimmyadventures.com.  Anyone can vote daily per email address as many days as desired now through April 25 to help Nikolas take home a prize.

Willow Springs, IL (2/19/08) -- The village of Willow Springs will receive a $48,000 federal grant to update three Fire Department vehicles and replace aging firefighting gear for its firefighters, Mayor Alan Nowaczyk announced Tuesday.
